Salmon fishing in the Heart of Scotland

Situated in beautiful Perthshire, the River Earn is the largest of the Tay tributaries and benefits from large salmon and seatrout runs.

Lower Aberuthven offers salmon and sea trout fishing on a daily and weekly permit basis that is both affordable and great value.

With over a mile of single bank access and six main pools there is plenty of room for up to six rods.

Smaller rod sizes (13-15 ft ) make for an easier day's fishing that can produce some spectacular results.

Prices start at £5 for trout and grayling.

Main Season 1st Feb- 31st Oct

The spring run is slowly improving, but the majority of salmon enter the river from mid summer onwards with August through October the prime months.

Sea trout arrive in April and the Earn has a deserved reputation as a premier seatrout river.

Season 2011 has seen high river levels and many disrupted fishing days. Despite this the Lower Aberuthven beat returned close to the 10 year average catch of 20 salmon with many weighing in the mid teens. (The largest salmon caught on the beat was a cock salmon weighing 43lbs was caught in the Orchard Pool in the late seventies.)

Fly and spinning are the accepted methods (see conservation policy). Shrimp flies (anything orange tinged in size 8 or 10 double) do well in the autumn especially if the river has some 1-2 foot flow.

Devon minnows, rapalas and flying "C"s are favoured spinning lures.

The beat operates a conservation policy as suggested by the TDSFB (see below).

Finding Lower Aberuthven Fishings

From Glasgow and the south west follow the A9 trunk road past Stirling and on to the second turnoff for Auchterarder/ Aberuthven.

About a mile past this junction and 100 yards before the large green Dunning/ Findo Gask sign there is a farm road directly off the main road on your left hand side.

Follow this road down to the farm (Haugh of Aberuthven).

From Perth and Edinburgh follow the A9 south (Stirling/ Glasgow) for about eight miles. About 1/2 mile after the sign for Dunning and Findo Gask (at the bridge over the Earn) there is a blue P (parking) sign.
